Breaking boundaries: exploring short‐ and long‐distance mitochondrial signalling in plants

چکیده
Communication of mitochondria with other cell compartments is essential for the coordination cellular functions. Mitochondria send retrograde signals through metabolites, redox changes, direct organelle contacts and protein trafficking. Accumulating evidence indicates that, in animal systems, changes mitochondrial function also trigger responses other, either neighbouring or distantly located, cells. Although not clearly established, there are indications that this type communication may be operative plants. Grafting experiments suggested translocation entire submitochondrial vesicles between cells possible plants, as already documented animals. Changes regulate cell-to-cell via plasmodesmata transmitted over long distances plant hormones acting mitokines to relay distant tissues. Long-distance movement transcripts encoding proteins involved crucial aspects metabolism signalling was described. Finally, reactive species (ROS) production affect ‘ROS wave’ triggers systemic acquired acclimation throughout plant. In review, we summarise available suggesting establish sophisticated communications only within but tissues coordinate growth stress a nonautonomous manner.

15 صفحه اولSomitogenesis Breaking New Boundaries
Segmentation is a fundamental process in vertebrate embryogenesis, and one of the earliest manifestations of segmental patterning is the generation of transient, serially repeated blocks of mesodermal cells known as somites. Disruption of the normal segmentation process in humans leads to vertebral abnormalities such as spondylocostal dysostosis. In this minireview, we discuss recent advances i...

For the past 60 years, the central nervous system has been considered immunologically privileged. Yet results from diverse fields show clear and convincing evidence of bidirectional communication between the nervous and immune systems.

Light perception and signalling in higher plants.
Plants monitor changes in the ambient light environment using sensory photoreceptor families: the phototropins and cryptochromes, which absorb UV-A or blue light; the phytochromes, which sense red/far-red light; and the UV-B photoreceptors, which have not yet been identified. Recent advances suggest that photoreceptor-induced signalling cascades regulate light-modulated gene expression. These r...
